Last night was an early night at the John Muir Lodge and we took our time getting
underway as the early morning temperatures were in the 30's (F). We
drove the park road to the Cedar Grove area, a distance of about
30 miles and the end of the steep and winding road.
About
10 miles in, we had this fabulous view of the canyons formed by both
branches of the Kings River.
We
descended a switchback road about 3500 ft to the canyon floor and
followed the river to a parking area for a number of trail heads.
Apparently, bears are a problem in this area.
We
started walking down the Bubbs Creek trail that started out fairly
open, affording a great view of the canyon.
After
about a mile, the two hikers about 100 ft ahead of us started
signalling to come look. Apparently we just missed a black bear that
was on the trail but had taken off to the woods. For the rest of the
hike, Chris was now on full swivel head mode as she was carrying the
backpack with the apples and granola bars.
The
trail narrowed as we started to parallel the river and we got to an
area with ferns and other lush growth.
After about two miles we crossed a bridge to the other side of the river.
After about two miles we crossed a bridge to the other side of the river.
Some
more interesting canyon and trail views...
We
crossed back over the river and made our way back to the car. A
little over 6 miles but relatively flat terrain.
On
our way back to the lodge, we stopped to hike the path to Roaring
River Falls. A cute waterfall of about 50 feet and a pristine stream.
Another view of the canyon as we drove back to the lodge.
We
were back to the Lodge in good time and had an opportunity to sit on
the porch and plan the next week's travels over a cold beer.
Supper
again was in the only restaurant again but was pretty good. Best feature
was the bring your own wine for free deal.
