Birthday Day for Chris and she gets a trip to Lassen Volcanic National Park, left over pizza for lunch, followed by a night in the stunning St Bernard Lodge!
We left Jim & Sharon's home in Sonoma at 9:30 am for the drive north to Lassen.
The trip north was interesting as we passed huge groves of olives, rice patties, orange groves, vineyards and artichoke fields. After about 220 miles and a 7000 ft elevation gain, we reached the park.
Here is a picture of our rental vehicle with Mt Lassen in the background...
Could be in the Hyundai sales brochure!
Fabulous views of the peaks and forests of large lodgepole pines.
We bought our one year pass for the National Parks and ventured into the park to do the hike to Bumpass Hell, named for Mr K. V. Bumpass who discovered the geothermal area. Wonder what Mrs Bumpass thought of her last name????
The trail starts out at the 8100 ft elevation and goes up and down several times. My gps recorded about 1200 total feet of climbing. Lots of great views leading up to to the geothermal area.
This is Bumpass Hell...
We continued on the trail to Cold Boiling Lake....
Saw a few critters along the way....
A deer foraging just off the trail...
A golden mantled ground squirrel (big chipmunk)...
We finished up the hike at around 5:00 pm and drove 20 miles to the St Bernard Lodge.
A rustic B&B in the middle of nowhere with a dog theme and shared bathrooms (didn't have to share with the dogs). Had an OK supper in the lodge and retired to the room to relax and publish the blog before retiring for the night.
