Wednesday September 19

We were staying in Newport Oregon for two nights so we struck out to explore some of the surrounding area. We travelled about 25 miles south to the little ocean-side town of Yachats.

We went to the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area and hiked three trails.

The first two shorter trails were at the seaside. It was fun watching the waves crash into the jagged coastline. We were there at high tide so there was some good wave action.

After exploring the seaside, we decided to take a hike inland through some old growth forest.

Very dense, damp and green. We didn't realize it when we started out but the trail had a difference in elevation of 1200 ft plus a lot of up and down. A good workout for us.

Lots of really big trees!

The damp conditions allowed lots of fungi to thrive...

In total we hiked almost 10 miles (16 km) so we were pretty well done with exploring on foot for the day. We had lunch at the roadside overlooking Yachats.

From there we made our way back to our hotel for a hot shower and a cold drink.

After resting for a bit, we took a walk to the beach in front of the hotel to watch the sunset.

We didn't feel like going out to a restaurant for supper so we made a quick trip to Safeway for some takeout chicken to eat in our room.
