A good night's rest at the Comfort Inn and we were ready to explore the area, especially after finding out I had won $387 on this week's football pool. Yea Broncos!
Today was supposed to be the second day of a relaxing two night stay in Morro Bay.
After breakfast, we ventured a mile or so down the street to Morro Bay State Park and did a 2 1/2 mike hike up and down the Black Hills trail which provided a good overview of the area. This was the second in a chain of nine volcanic mounds between here and Paso Robles.
Not long but fairly steep. Part of the trail was through a Eucalyptus forest.
Chris has picked out another beach trail north of town that started as a boardwalk then turned into a beach walk toward Morro Rock.
We saw some interesting shore birds we don't encounter in Florida. A long Billed Curlew....
a Marbled Godwit....
a California Gull....
We took some time to watch the surfers ....
The rocks along the shore were infested with California Ground Squirrels, friendly little rodents...
The local fire department was practising high angle techniques on Morro Rock when some of their own got stuck. Looked like everyone got down OK.
We walked to the inlet to the bay and saw a half dozen Sea Otters playing. They wouldn't get close enough for a really good picture.
The Harbour Patrol had to race out to rescue a broken down boat ...
A view of the town from the base of the rock....
We walked back to the car and realized we had just done another 4 1/2 mile hike along the beach. No more hiking today.
We drove to the end of the road adjacent to Morro Rock to watch the surf pound when we encountered a bunch of people looking up. There were a couple of Peregrine Falcons perched on the rock, several hundred feet up. Apparently there was a group of birders there for five hours this morning looking for them to no avail. Well, here they were and I had my camera. Probably should get a 500mm lens.
Look real close to see the falcon on its perch....
We ventured to the main street to look in a few stores then retreated to our hotel for some snacks.
Yes, there are lawyers in California....
After a couple of hours or R&R in our room, we walked down to the bay for some views of sunset.
On our way home, we stopped at a nice Thai Restaurant for supper.
